Cambrian’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Commitment

As one, Cambrian College acknowledges that our campuses are built on the traditional lands of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek descendants of the Objibwe, Algonquin and Odawa Nations of Turtle Island and that the large area we consider Greater Sudbury and Espanola also exist within and adjacent to the territorial lands of the Wahnapitae First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Whitefish First Nation.

We honour, recognize, and respect these Indigenous People and the traditional steward of the land which we share today and commit to creating a learning environment that honours our commitment to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We acknowledge that structural barriers impact equity, and are upheld by individuals and systemic biases, including anti-feminist sexism, anti-black racism, and ableism.

Cambrian College has been on a journey to create an environment where those of all identities and experiences can thrive. To Cambrian College, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion means a learning and working environment where all learners are allowed to learn, and all employees have opportunities to excel in their work regardless of their identity. Cambrian College recognizes it delivers higher education to learners of diverse experiences, backgrounds, and identities and it is important that the College understands and celebrates the diverse needs and experiences of all.

The goal of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is the encourage and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture and environment that inspires and enables all who live, learn, and work at Cambrian College to thrive.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion framework

Cambrian College has had a long-standing commitment to building a healthy campus and identified “Enhance College Wellness” as one of its eight strategic pillars in the Strategic Plan, 2020-2025. It also previously introduced a Wellness and Resiliency Framework to acknowledge the impact that post-secondary education has on both student and employee’s well-being, and how their well-being can impact student academic success and employee engagement and retention. The College also recognizes, that to build a healthy campus, it must also build a campus committed to the principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI).

Cambrian College understands that post-secondary is not always attainable for all. Barriers such as financial barriers, informational barriers, a lack of belonging and engagement, underrepresentation, biases, invisible and otherwise exist around every corner, and despite our increasing diversity, we still have a long way to go to build an inclusive, equitable, and accessible learning environment where everyone feels welcomed, engaged, and valued.

Cambrian College is proud to offer safer spaces to students, staff, and faculty. These spaces are intended to be free of bias, conflict, criticisms, threatening ideas, or conversations. Everyone is welcome to visit, stay, learn about the resources available, and meet new friends.

Reporting an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Concern

Any concern on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) by students, staff, or faculty should be reported to the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Once received, we will provide support, education, and advice on matters relating to EDI and advice on matters relating to discrimination and/or harassment, sexual violence, accessibility, and other human rights-related issues to all members of the campus community, including Academic and Administrative Leaders.

Each situation is addressed by the manager following the college’s policies and procedures. In addition to providing advice on the matter identified, the manager of EDI may also:

  • Assist with alternative dispute resolution (including facilitated discussions, mediation, and/or education)
  • Provide information to individuals on the various support programs/mechanisms available to them
  • Give information on the complaint and investigation process (as appropriate).

The reporting of the concern can be done through an online form and can be submitted to equity@cambriancollege.ca or dropped off at the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Sexual Assault and Sexual Violence

Cambrian College values respect for all individuals, civility, diversity, dignity, equality, and freedom. The college is committed to maintaining a healthy and safe learning, living, social, recreational, and working environment. We are committed to maintaining a campus free of discrimination and harassment and strive to foster an atmosphere of healthy attitudes and behaviours towards sexuality, sex, and gender roles.

The college will not tolerate behaviour that contributes to a hostile and inequitable learning and working environment. We take seriously our commitment to supporting those who experience sexual violence, and we work diligently on campus and with community partners on programs, policies, and resources, to ensure that our campus remains free from sexual violence.

All members of the Cambrian College community have a right to work and study in an environment that is free from any form of sexual violence. This policy and its related protocol set out how we address sexual violence and resources to support individuals and groups who may be directly or indirectly involved in working with persons who have experienced sexual violence. It ensures that those who experience sexual violence are believed, and appropriately accommodated and ensures the college has a process of investigation that protects the rights of individuals and holds individuals who have committed an act of sexual violence accountable.
