SUDBURY – High-school students from across Sudbury were at Cambrian College today to learn some of the key ABCs of business.

More than 60 Grade 9-12 students from high schools in Greater Sudbury and Espanola were on campus for the College’s first-ever High School Business Case Study Competition.

“We are seeing more young people taking a very keen interest in business and entrepreneurship, and we want to help foster those skills,” explains Dr. Parvinder Arora, Dean of Cambrian’s Schools of Business, IT, and Media Art & Design. “This competition is a great way for students to experience what is possible in the world of business and how they can begin that journey by pursuing an education that focusses on business.”

During the Business Case Study Competition, teams of four students worked together to analyze a business case, problem-solve, and come up with creative solutions. In the process, they developed communication, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills.

More than bragging rights were on the line! The event was sponsored by KPMG, which provided to competition winners eight $500 scholarships to any business program at Cambrian College.

Winners were chosen by a special panel made up of business professionals, faculty members, and KPMG staff.

“We think this is an amazing idea and we’re happy to be the leading sponsor of this competition,” says Kyle Ellis from KPMG. “The business world is in need of young, eager, and focused graduates and we’re hoping that offering eight winning students a scholarship worth $500 will inspire them to pursue business once they are done high school.”

The inaugural winners of the Cambrian College High School Business Case Competition are:

Grade 9-10 Category – Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School

Grade 11-12 Category – Lockerby Composite School.

“We are very grateful to Cambrian College’s Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business and KPMG for offering students this hands-on learning experience,” adds Amanda Barry, a teacher at Lockerby Composite School in Sudbury. “The Business Case Study Competition is a great way for students to get a sense of what a career in business could be like. Studies in business and entrepreneurship are gaining in popularity because students recognize that the skills learned open doors to opportunities in a variety of sectors, not only here in our community but globally.”
